Agents Feared Lost On Awful Tide

Operation: A.F.L.O.A.T. is the first story in the second episode of Season 3 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on June 18, 2004 on Cartoon Network.

Summary

The KND crashland into a sea of asparagus, and find out that they have more to worry about than staying afloat.

Plot

One day, the Toiletnator made his way to Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb’s house for the Annual We Hate the Kids Next Door Barbecue. Mr. Boss thought that Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb sent the Toiletnator the fake invitation even though they did. The Toiletnator spotted hamburgers but didn’t want one because of what it does to one’s digestive system and had asparagus instead but Mr. Boss said that it is what adults make the KND eat.

Sector V infiltrates the villain’s barbecue but had to escape to the M.E.G.A.R.A.G.E. when they realize there were too many villains for them to handle. They are pursued and eventually shot down by Stickybeard and his crew when trying to escape. As they recover from the crash landing Numbuh 4 thinks he is drowning only to realize that the water isn’t water but it is just asparagus. Numbuh 1 negates the idea of it being asparagus only to see for himself it was true. Numbuh 2 informs the rest of the team that it will take hours to get the gum outta the engines. Numbuh 5 seems okay with relaxing while Numbuh 4 dislikes the idea of not being able to eat anything.

Time passes and after Numbuh 4 mentions all the food he wants to eat, Numbuh 1 snaps at Numbuh 2 about how much longer it will take. Numbuh 2 reiterates the fact that getting the gum out of the engines is harder than getting out of people's hair. The ship begins to rock and Numbuh 2 assumes the others did it. Numbuh 2 saw a strange figure swim by and got scared and wanted to come out. Numbuh 1 once again snaps at Numbuh 2 to finish only to witness the second deck flood with asparagus with Numbuh 2 in it. Numbuh 1 tries to save him only to be stopped by Numbuh 5 who states that he is gone. Numbuh 1 begins blaming himself for the incident and tries to open the hatch to save him, but is once again stopped by Numbuh 5.

Numbuh 4, who is now mad with hunger, hallucinates and starts to see a mirage of Numbuh 3's Happy Barbeque Rainbow Monkey as a giant cheeseburger. He starts to chase Numbuh 3, who eventually escapes only to be eaten by the Great White Asparagus afterwards. Numbuhs 1 and 5 show great concern over their lost teammate while Numbuh 4's only concern is the "cheeseburger" left by Numbuh 3. Numbuh 4 spots it and jumps on broken pieces of the boat to retrieve it, only for the rest of the team to see the sea monster coming back. The Great White Asparagus then charges at Numbuh 4 only to disappear in the sea. Numbuh 4 reaches the rainbow monkey and Numbuh 1 starts ordering Numbuh 4 to return to the safety of the ship, only to be eaten in mid sentence. Numbuh 4 is about to eat the rainbow monkey when the monster jumps in the air and eats it itself. Numbuh 4 demands the return of his "cheeseburger" by jumping in the sea only to realize, water or not, he cannot swim and seemingly drowns. Numbuh 5 then starts to panic about the loss of Numbuh 4 and the rest of her team only to see that the monster is coming back. The monster disappears in the water and then surfaces to attack Numbuh 5 only to be shot by gum wads from a unknown source and then she seemingly drowns. As Numbuh 5 awakens unconscious to see the beast captured, she attempted to attack Stickybeard, who showed her teammates were freed unharmed, and her unlikeliest of allies Stickybeard and his crew, who had saved her and her friends, they also take care of Sector V on the way back to shore and Sitckybeard says he's not gonna let a "blasted vegetable do anyone in" and asks that Numbuh 5 not mention this to the other villains or else they wouldn't invite him to the next villain's cookout. Sector V was pleased at what Stickybeard had done and promised not to tell anyone what he did.

Trivia

• The Toiletnator is shown to own a car, which he never uses again in the series.
• This is the second and last time Father is featured in an episode without a speaking role. The last time was in Operation: M.O.V.I.E..
• Stickybeard actually acted as an ally at the end of the episode, but made Numbuh 5 promise not to tell the other villains, or else "they won't invite [him] to the next villain's BBQ".
• There are four shots of villains who make cameos:
  • The first one shows Mr. Boss, Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb and the Toilenator.
  • The second one shows Knightbrace, Stickybeard and his crew, Ice Cream Men, and PTOOEY members Principle and the Terrible Tutor.

• This episode was made to be the second story of the episode (28b), but aired as the first one.

Series Continuity

• Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb's house is seen for the first time since Operation: C.O.W.G.I.R.L..
• This is the second large villain gathering in the series, after Operation: M.O.V.I.E., which starts the tradition of one episode each season featuring a big get-together of villains. The next episodes are:
  • Season 4: Operation: M.A.C.A.R.R.O.N.I..
  • Season 5: Operation: M.U.N.C.H.I.E.S./Operation: C.A.N.Y.O.N..
  • Season 6: Operation: A.W.A.R.D.S..
• This is the first time we see Mr. Boss' backyard and house. They are later shown again in Operation: S.L.U.M.B.E.R., but are not revealed to be his house until Operation: D.A.D.D.Y..
• The Great White Asparagus later makes cameo appearances in Operation: L.I.C.O.R.I.C.E. and Operation: I.N.T.E.R.V.I.E.W.S..
• The Blurpleberry flavor is again mentioned by Stickybeard.

• This episode is a parody of Jaws, which in turn is a remaking of Moby Dick and Open Water.
• "Food, food everywhere, not a bite to eat" is a parody of "water, water verywhere, not a drop to drink" from the book, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".
• The Great White Asparagus is also a parody of the "White Whale," Moby-Dick.

Errors/Goofs

• The asparagus box brought by the Toiletnator disappears after he takes out the asparagus.
• The Cheese Ninja Leader is seen with a cheese fondue, even though Cheese Ninjas specifically do not eat cheese.
• Mr. Boss drops his cigar when Sector V announce their arrival, but has regained it when he orders the capture of the kids.
• When the Cheese Ninja leader jumps over the fence, he doesn't have the extra parts to his cheese helmet that tells him apart from other cheese ninjas.
• The weapons and the rainbow monkey that Sector V were holding disappear when they are just behind the M.E.G.A.R.A.G.E..
• In the shot of Mr. Boss realizing that the garage is not his, Mr. Wink's apron is missing the pink pig from earlier.
• Count Spankulot is drawn with two left hands in the same shot.
• When Numbuh 3 says, "bye bye bad guys, happy grilling," she is facing forward away from the bad guys.
• After the M.E.G.A.R.A.G.E. is first hit and Numbuh 4 falls off his seat, the next exterior shot of the M.E.G.A.R.A.G.E. is the same shot as when they first flew away, but with added gumballs. Everyone are facing forward, and Numbuh 4 can be seen sitting perfectly fine in his seat.
• Numbuh 4's hoodie is not visible in the shot zooming in on them from showing the sun. Numbuh 3's rainbow monkey is also not visible here.
• Numbuh 2 shouldn't be able to see the Great White Asparagus through the boat window, as that part of the boat is fully inside of the garage.
• Just before the asparagus start flooding the M.E.G.A.R.A.G.E., the red boat is visible, despite it being completely under asparagus earlier.
• The leak in the M.E.G.A.R.A.G.E. came from the top of the wall, meaning the vehicle would have been almost entirely sunken already.
• The trapdoor on top is gone in the shot after they close it on Numbuh 2.
• Numbuh 3's rainbow monkey was not on top of the trapdoor when she was putting sunblock on it, but it someone is on the trapdoor in the next shot.
• The KND flag is gone when Numbuh 4 starts chasing after Numbuh 3.
• The size of the Great White Asparagus varies between scenes.
• In the shot of the Great White Asparagus hanging on the Sweet Revenge, none of the others in Sector V are visible on the pile of candy.
• The green lolipop in Stickybeard's beard changes to purple in the shot of Numbuh 5 pulling it out to hand it back to Stickybeard.
