Dueling Over Gooey Frankfurters Invariably Gives Hoagie Trouble

"Operation: D.O.G.F.I.G.H.T." is the first story in the twelfth episode of Season 2 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on May 28, 2004 on Cartoon Network.

Information[]

Summary[]

Numbuh 2 repeatedly got blown out the sky by someone known only as "The Kid". The reason he has is to stop him from destroying the Chili Dog factories in town. But the mastermind behind this conflict is Mr. Washer, who wanted no chili dog on his counter. Before he could do that, however, his plan was foiled by Hoagie and The Kid when they combined the parts of their planes to stop Mister Washer.

Plot[]

The episode starts with a narration from Numbuh 2, talking about how “it takes a special kind of kid to rule the skies.” Inside Mr. Washer's Hobby Shop, Numbuh 2 makes a purchase of extra sticky glue, star decals, and 10 gallons of jet fuel enhancer. Numbuh 2 leaves a chilidog on Mr. Washer’s countertop, to the old timer’s disgust. When he steps outside, a food vendor tosses him a chilidog on the house. A confident Numbuh 2 hops into his Bait Plane, chilidog in mouth, and takes to the skies.

As he flies, a rogue pilot, known simply as the Kid, begins firing pool balls at him, prompting Numbuh 2 to take immediate evasive action. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to shake them. He hits the turbo and flies straight up. As the Kid follows closely behind, Numbuh 2 kills his engines, allowing his adversary to fly past him, then starting up again to get into a firing position. He fires cans of creamed corn at the Kid’s engines, but a shield deflects every single shot. The Kid releases a smoke screen, temporarily distracting Numbuh 2. He accidentally flies the Bait Plane into the side of a mountain, but not before ejecting to safety. The other pilot drops a missile from the sky near Numbuh 2’s position, but it turns out to just be a fake missile carrying a message: Stay out of the sky.

Back at the treehouse, a frustrated Numbuh 2 is modifying the C.O.O.L.B.U.S. to withstand potential attacks from the Kid. He flies around again, but the C.O.O.L.B.U.S. is shot down immediately. Several more times, Numbuh 2 repeats this: modifying ships and planes, only to be shot down in a hail of gunfire every single time. Vehicles modified include the M.O.S.Q.U.I.T.T.O.H., B.O.O.S.T.B.I.K.E., C.A.S.U.A.L., and many more, all of which are destroyed.

Sometime later, the S.K.Y.C.L.A.W. crashes just outside Mr. Washer’s Hobby Store, with Numbuh 2 parachuting to the ground. The food vendor from earlier throws him another free chilidog, but the demoralized KND operative lets it land on the pavement instead of catching it. He goes inside the Hobby Store and asks Mr. Washer for model trains instead of plane parts. He tells the old shop owner that he’s giving up being a pilot after having been shot down numerous times. Mr. Washer gives Numbuh 2 some encouragement, to which the young operative offers him a bite of his chilidog, but the grossed-out senior refuses. As Numbuh 2 tries to figure out how the Kid is able to resist his attacks, his sky rival enters the shop, chilidog in hand. Mr. Washer gives the Kid his flight buffer magnetizer (F.B.M.) upgrade, giving Numbuh 2 the idea to purchase something similar to match the Kid.

Numbuh 2 takes to the skies once more, this time calling out the Kid with a microphone and speakers. The Kid answers his taunts and the two begin dogfighting, this time evenly matched. They fly vertically upwards, both their planes just inches from one another. Numbuh 2 releases a powerful magnet that sticks to the Kid’s airplane and sabotages his controls, causing him to fly uncontrollably. With his shields completely disabled, Numbuh 2 takes his fatal shots that send the Kid’s plane to the ground. As the confident operative prematurely celebrates, the Kid gets one last barrage of shots in as he goes down. They manage to hit Numbuh 2’s wings, and he too crashes and ejects.

As the two parachute down together, Numbuh 2 teases the Kid to his face about how he “rules the skies no more.” That’s when the Kid reveals to him that his reasoning for shooting him down so many times was because Mr. Washer fed him lies that Numbuh 2 was planning to destroy chilidog vendors in town, along with the factory. Just then, Mr. Washer takes off with an enormous bomber plane with plans to rid the town of chilidogs, inspired by his countertops being constantly smudged with the stuff. He begins dropping refrigerators onto vendors and diners serving chilidogs. Although both Numbuh 2 and the Kid’s planes are completely destroyed, they quickly get an idea to fight back against the grumpy shopkeeper.

As Mr. Washer’s blitzkrieg continues, he enters the coordinates of the big chilidog factory to take it out with one big refrigerator. He notices in the bright skies a plane, the D.U.O.P.L.A.N.E., being piloted by Numbuh 2 and the Kid. The two former adversaries crash into the cockpit and disrupt the bombardment. Unfortunately, there’s no stopping the plane’s guidance system from crashing right into the factory. He escapes out the back. The Kid tells Numbuh 2 to go after him while he stays and controls where exactly the plane will crash. As Mr. Washer jumps off the plane using a homemade hang glider, Numbuh 2 jumps after him, grabbing his feet and pulling their weight to the ground. They notice the Kid sending Mr. Washer’s bomber on a collision course with the Hobby Store, to his dismay. (He is mainly concerned about his countertop.)

The plane crashes and Numbuh 2 runs down to the wreckage. With the Kid nowhere to be found, Numbuh 2 believes him to have perished in the crash. Moments later, the Kid emerges without a single scratch on him. When asked about how he did it, the Kid responds that he’s simply “the best.”

Back at the Sector V treehouse, Numbuh 2 is telling the story about the Kid to his fellow operatives, all of them eating chilidogs. He had asked the Kid to join the Kids Next Door, but was told he works alone but was glad to have been invited to be a member of the KND. The episode ends with an optimistic Numbuh 2 hopeful they’ll meet again in the wild blue skies.

Trivia[]

  • A dogfight is an aerial battle between fighter aircraft, conducted at close range which is fitting for this episode.
  • In the acronym, the word "Frankfurters" is another term for hot dogs.
  • This is the first appearance of Mr. Washer and Julian, both of which only appear once more in the series.
    • This is the only episode in which Mr. Washer plays a major role.
  • This is also the first appearance of The Kid.
  • Mr. Washer wouldn't have had to worry about chilli dogs if he'd simply put a "No food or drink" sign in his window to stop his customers from bringing chilli dogs into his shop.
  • A lot of fans seem to believe the Kid is named "Ace", which is what Mr. Washer calls all his customers.
  • Hoagie has the KND logo on his keychain.
  • This episode is mentioned in the Sooper Secrets and Boomerang Bloopers booklet, but Numbuh 2 claims that he won the final fight against The Kid.
  • The quesion mark on The Kid's plane is likely a reference to the 1929 airplane, Question Mark, which established several new aviation world records.
  • The Kid's airplane being so brightly colored could be taken from the WW1 German plane squadron, The Flying Circus, led by the famous aviator, the Red Baron.
  • The term, "Flying ace", is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy planes during aerial combat.
  • Mr. Washer's plane might be modeled after some of the multiplaned aircrafts built around WW1.
  • This is Numbuh 2's first solo episode.
  • Numbuh 2 is the only member of Sector V to talk in this episode.

Production Notes[]

  • Guy Moore made it his personal goal to blow up every single ship, featured in the series up until this episode, in this episode; but most of them got cut from the episode.[1]

Series Continuity[]

Pop Culture References[]

  • Sky King is a 1930s radio and TV-series about an aircraft pilot.
  • "Ace" is likely a reference to the 1930s aviation comic, Ace Drummond.
  • The way The Kid sent a pirate-like flag at Hoagie might be a reference to the concept of an Air pirate, used in science fiction.
  • "Wild blue sky" might be a reference to the 1951 film, The Wild Blue Yonder.

Errors/Goofs[]

  • Whe Hoagie first exits Mr. Washer's Hobby Shop, he's carrying the jet fuel enchancer with the bottom first. But when he is thrown a chili dog, he is suddenly carrying it top first.
  • It's unknown why Hoagie would use the E.L.I.M.O.N.A.T.E.R. against The Kid, as it's not equipped with any weaponry.
  • The firing buttons on the T.U.B.A.D.U.B. yoke randomly appear and disappear between use.
  • When Mr. Washer's Flying Fortress first appears, the crash site of Hoagie and the Kid is not very far outside the city. But after Mr. Washer starts his attack and the shot pans over to the crash site, it's now far off from the city.
    • It's also unknown how Hoagie and The Kid could see Mr. Washer's attack from that distance.
  • Mr. Washer starts off flying directly over the city centre, but his first target is Julian's chili dog stand outside his own shop, which is outside of the city.
  • The view outside of Mr. Washer's cockpit shows that his plane has barely moved between its first introduction and when it's crashed into by Hoagie and The Kid.
  • Despite flying past his own shop in the beginning of his flight, Mr. Washer still ends up just on the other side from it when he jumps off his plane with Hoagie on his back.
  • Mr. Washer and Hoagie crashed into the middle of the street left from Mr. Washer shop, but in the next shot appears on a hill to the right from the shop.
  • When the Kid walks past Hoagie on the sidewalk, he is clearly walking onto the grass, but then the shot cuts to him walking away on the sidewalk to the street further down from Hoagie.
  • When the shot cuts to Hoagie in the treehouse with his team, Numbuh 5 appears to bite into the middle of the chili dog instead of one of the ends.
    • She is then seen chewing, even though her chili dog appears entirely intact.
