Everyone Nearly Decommissioned

Operation: E.N.D. is the thirteenth and final episode of Season 2 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on June 4, 2004 on Cartoon Network and marked Numbuh 274's switch to a villain.

Information

Summary

Numbuh 86 arrives at the KND treehouse and captures Numbuh 2, 3, 4, and 5 for decommissioning. Numbuh 1, having previously eluded Numbuh 86, immediately sets out to determine who's ordering the wrongful decommissioning of KND operatives.

Plot

On a normal day, Numbuh 1 and his father Monty Uno are happily fishing in the lake, but the good times are quickly over when Numbuh 86 and her Decommissioning Squad arrive and say Numbuh 1 is on the schedule for decommissioning. Numbuh 1 tries to explain to Numbuh 86 that it's too early for him, but she won't listen. Numbuh 1 leads them on a long chase back to the Sector V treehouse, but he arrives just in time to see his treehouse being taken away. Just as Numbuh 86 and her goons are about to apprehend him, he uses the mail in his mailbox as a weapon to evade them.

While Numbuh 1 is still trying to hide from the Decommissioning Squad, he runs into Numbuh 274, who reacts with hesitation when he sees Numbuh 1 holding an envelope. Numbuh 274 warns him about a conspiracy inside the Kids Next Door Organization that wants to decommission his team. Numbuh 1 stands up and wants to find his teammates, only to see them being taken away in Numbuh 86's ship. Numbuh 274 offers to help, but Numbuh 1 refuses as this is a mission that involves himself and his friends.

Later, he goes to Numbuh 2's house, where he finds his younger brother, Tommy Gilligan, who is still bitter about not being allowed to join the Kids Next Door. Tommy agrees to help him when Numbuh 1 offers to let Tommy join, and they use a spaceship that he and Numbuh 2 have been working on to get to the Kids Next Door Moonbase. On the way, Tommy finds a birthday party invitation in Numbuh 1's pocket, and when Numbuh 1 reads it, he finally finds out who's behind this. Unfortunately, their transport starts to malfunction due to a few design flaws that Tommy hadn't had the time to fix yet.

Meanwhile, Numbuh 86 takes Numbuhs 2 - 5 to the Decommissioning Chamber to erase their memory. While the machine is running, Numbuh 1 and Tommy crash their ship into the chamber, releasing Numbuhs 2 - 5, but not fast enough, as when Numbuh 5 thanks Numbuh 1, she does not remember his identity.

While Numbuh 1 is dismayed that his team no longer remembers him, he has to act quickly, as Numbuh 86 breaks the door down and crashes into the chamber. Numbuh 1 brings his teammates up to speed about what's going on, and then destroys the bridges supporting the area they're standing on, sending them crashing down to escape.

Numbuh 1, Tommy, and decommissioned Numbuhs 2 - 5 fall to Numbuh 274's office, where he is looking at the list of operatives set to be decommissioned. Unfortunately, Numbuh 86 and her squad quickly find them there and orders them to put their hands up. Numbuh 274 apologizes to Numbuh 1 for getting him into this situation. That's when Numbuh 1 says he's disappointed that this means he will have to miss Chad's upcoming party.

Numbuh 274, hearing this, starts to feel nervous. Numbuh 1 admits that he had no idea who was behind all of this, until he looked at his mail, pulling out the envelope that Tommy noticed earlier. Numbuh 86 grabs the envelope and reads it, then looks very shocked: the message inside is an invitation to Numbuh 274's 13th birthday party. As everyone gasps in shock, Numbuh 274, also shocked, screams and hits the table by saying: "I TOLD MY PARENTS I DIDN'T WANT A STUPID PARTY!"

Then Numbuh 1 explains the whole situation: Numbuh 274 knew that he would be decommissioned if anybody found out about his 13th birthday, so he hacked into the mainframe and falsified his age months ago, but forgot that his parents were planning on throwing a party until after they mailed the invitations.

The only way to ensure that no one learned the truth was by erasing the memories of the KND operatives on the birthday invitation list. However that the only way to do that was by having them decommissioned. Numbuh 1 explains that it was only a simple matter of getting into the mainframe, upping everyone's ages to 13 to turn them into teenagers, and let Numbuh 86 and her troops do the dirty work for him, much to Numbuh 86's shock and anger as she stares firmly at Numbuh 274.

Numbuh 274 / Chad Dickson tells everyone that they don't understand what he's been through. He's been in the organization for five years, and he isn't about to throw away everything he's accomplished during that time just because of a bunch of "snot-nosed brats". Numbuh 1 tells him to listen to himself, for he sounds just like a teenager. Soon, the Decommissioning Squad points their guns at him, and much to Chad's shock, Numbuh 86 says he is on the schedule to be decommissioned immediately for turning into a teenager. Tommy asks Chad how he likes it, and, in retaliation, Chad takes Tommy away to become his hostage and puts a code on the computer to open the Moonbase's root retainer to fly away to the Sun. He says this is his special birthday present to himself and makes his escape.

As the Moonbase hurtles through space toward the Sun, Numbuh 1 and Numbuh 3 have an idea to use a fishing pole to fish the Moonbase back to the moon. Then Numbuh 4 gets on Chad's ship and furiously beats him up after getting called "squirt". He then realizes that he can't drive the spaceship, so Tommy helps him to drive the ship back to the moon and attach it once more.

When it's over, Numbuh 86 thanks Sector V for saving the day, and she orders her squad to take Chad away to be decommissioned. She whispers to Numbuhs 2 - 5 that she can recommission them if they want. At first, they are reluctant, but everybody agrees in the order of their Numbuh. In gratitude for Tommy's help, Numbuh 1 puts him in the Kids Next Door training program in Antarctica.

Chad is locked in the cell, awaiting his decommissioning. In the meantime, Cree Lincoln arrives using the Flying Trash can (Details in Operation: S.P.A.C.E.) and voices her plan to drive the moonbase to the sun. As she laughs, Chad tells her that he had already tried that act but it didn't work. Hearing this, Cree is disappointed and decides she must use Plan B. Seeing a chance to escape, Chad asks if she could use help. She agrees and says "Sure, kid. Come on!" and hops into the trash can. Chad then says "I'm not a kid. I'm a teenager!" and gets into the trash can to fly away with Cree.

In the end credits, Numbuhs 2 - 5 are all recommissioned. When it's over, they have a party on the moon and go back to their fixed treehouse. Meanwhile, Tommy is ordered by Numbuh 86 to repair the damage he caused to the decommissioning chamber.

Trivia

  • This is the first appearance of the Decommissioning Squad after being mentioned in prior episodes.
  • This is the first of several episodes to use a cold open before the main title sequence.
  • This episode reveals that Numbuh 86 has a crush on Numbuh 4, to which he is flattered by this news in the hopes she reconsiders decommissioning him.
  • Numbuh 274 leaves the KND in this episode, which causes a major twist in the series.
  • When Numbuh 274 was changing mainframe, his computer has Sector V's logo.
  • This is the last time we see Numbuh 274 working on the moonbase as Supreme Leader.
  • Numbuh 1 mentions that he and Numbuh 86 have been going to school together since at least Kindergarten, and points out that she should know how old he is.
  • Mr. Warburton originally wanted this episode's plot to be the story of a KND movie, but Cartoon Network wasn't convinced yet that Codename: Kids Next Door should get a movie.[1]
    • Mr. W wanted to save the story for the movie, but convinced himself that if the series got cancelled, he would never get a chance to use this story. As such he decided to use the story for Operation: E.N.D. while the movie would later become what we know as Operation: Z.E.R.O..[2]
  • The Kids Next Door Arctic Base is first mentioned in this episode.
  • The end credits show a couple of events after the episode: Sector V being recommissioned, playing on the Moon's surface, Tommy cleaning up after the rocket he crashed into the Decom Chamber, Sector V leaving the Moonbase via a S.T.A.R.W.R.E.C.K., and the Sector V treehouse restored with a giant band-aid.

Series Continuity

  • This episode concludes the story arc that started in Operation: S.U.P.P.O.R.T., and continued through Operation: K.I.S.S. and Operation: S.P.A.C.E..
  • This is the second time Numbuh 1 is on a fishing trip with his dad. The last trip was in Operation: O.O.M.P.P.A.H. at the very same lake.
  • When Numbuh 1 barges into Tommy's house, it is possible to see a photo of Tommy, Numbuh 2, their mom and their dog. This dog is mentioned in Operation: T.R.I.C.Y.C.L.E..
  • Tommy states he wants to be KND operative "Numbuh T", which he does become in Operation: G.R.A.D.U.A.T.E.S..
  • Numbuh 1 has Tommy admitted to the Cadets Next Door program, which starts in Operation: T.R.A.I.N.I.N.G..
  • Numbuh 274 says that he has been running this organization, or ‘show’ for five years. This is not exclusively referring to his run as Supreme Leader (which would've been around two years at most), but also his run as an operative; The implication being that he was so skilled and capable that he essentially carried the entire organization.
  • Ironically, the initial Diseasy Does It pilot pitch premiered five years ago at this point.
    • As seen in Operation: M.A.U.R.I.C.E., Numbuh 100 was initially the supreme leader during Chad's five-year reign in the KND, before he took over after his decommissioning (around two years before the events of this episode).
  • Numbuhs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are called Sector V for the first time in this episode.
  • At the end of the episode, Numbuh 86 says she can bring back the memories of Numbuh 2, 3, 4, and 5. This is the first mention in the series of the recommissioning module. This will later be an important plot device in Operation: Z.E.R.O..
  • Like the previous season finale, this episode contains references and callbacks to other episodes from this season:
  • It is later revealed in Operation: T.R.E.A.T.Y. that Chad was secretly an undercover operative and his attempt to send the Moonbase into the sun was actually to stop Cree from doing so.

Errors/Goofs

  • When Numbuh 86 removes a newspaper page from the windshield, the rest of the decommissioning vehicle is not visible outside the side window.
  • The Decommissioning Squad members on the other decommissioning vehicle is switched when Numbuh 86 is driving towards them. Where there was Numbuh 99 in yellow, with a boy and girl guard both dressed in white; there's now a girl dressed in yellow, the same boy guard in white, and a new boy guard also dressed in white.
  • Monty Uno somehow still has his fishing rod when he and Numbuh 1 return to the house, even though Numbuh 1 threw it away earlier.
  • The bus Numbuh 1 and his dad takes home appears to have doors on both sides when they walk out of it.
  • The bus driver's seat is empty when it drives away to reveal the Decommissioning Squad.
  • Numbuh 1 is not visible in front of his house in the shot of the treehouse being cut down.
  • Numbuh 1 only grabbed four envelopes from his mailbox, all of which he threw at the Decommissioning Squad. He should not have a last envelope to keep as a final weapon.
  • The KND Moonbase is somehow extremely visible from Earth when Numbuh 86 is flying her S.P.R.A.Y.S.H.I.P. towards it.
  • The Decommissioning guards guarding Sector V change between shots while they're being transported through Moonbase to the Decommissioning Chamber.
  • When Tommy mentions the design flaws and Numbuh 1 says, "Yeeees...", Numbuh 1's butt is colored red like his shirt instead of gray like his pants. His socks are also colored brown like his shoes.
  • When they crash into the Decom Chambers, the two walkways on the sides of the central platform are missing.
  • Numbuh 1 picks up Numbuh 86's M.U.S.K.E.T. on the central platform in the Decommissioning Chamber, even though she dropped it on one of the walkways.
  • When Numbuh 1 tells the decommissioned team that they are at the KND Moonbase, we see the decommissioning device unharmed, despite Numbuh 1 and Tommy totally destroying it a minute before to rescue Sector V. It then disappears in the next shot.
  • The walkways in the Decommissioning Chamber disappear and reappear in the background between shots.
  • When Numbuh 86 and her squad blasts into the chamber, their background appears to be open space.
  • Just before Numbuh 1 shoots out the first walkway, the decommissioning chamber device can again be seen unharmed above the platform.
  • The direction from where the Decommissioning Squad's shots are coming from, change between each shot of Numbuh 1 shooting out a walkway. And there are great inconsistencies with which platforms Numbuh 1 shoots out:
    • He first shoots out the walkway to the left of where the Decom Squad is shooting from., which is also where Numbuh 3 and 4 are standing.
    • Numbuh 1 then moves to shoot out the walkway left of the broken window, which is the same platform he just shot. But now the Decom Squad is shooting from the left, when they were just shooting at Sector V from the front.
    • When Numbuh 5 is handed a muffler and told to smash in the walkway next to her, three of the four platforms are still remaining, including the first walkway Numbuh 1 destroyed.
    • Numbuh 5 then knocks out the right walkway, while Numbuh 1 shoots out of the one in the back, which then causes the platform to fall as if the last walkway didn't remain.
  • The muffler Numbuh 1 hands to Numbuh 5 was not previously on the platform.
  • The walkway leading to the broken window leads off to the side instead in the shot of the platform starting to fall down.
  • Numbuh 274's chair is not visible in the overview shot of his office.
  • The angle of Numbuh 274's L.U.N.C.H.B.O.C.K.S. change a couple of times between shots.
  • When Numbuh 1 says, "my mail!", Numbuh 86 is visible to his right, when she has been standing to his left since she entered the room.
  • She also reads the letter while standing on his left side, but is suddenly on Numbuh 1's right side when he starts explaining Numbuh 274's evil plan.
  • The Decom Squad set their laser sights on Numbuh 274, but dropped them in the next shot for no apparent reason.
  • The gray typewriter lever on Numbuh 274's L.U.N.C.H.B.O.C.K.S. is black when he's typing in the command to release the Moonbase restraints.
  • Only the part Numbuh 4 is sitting on is visible when Numbuh 3 calls to him just before launch.
  • The Subway Shuttle Pod's back window, which Numbuh 4 broke to enter through, is fixed when the pod lands on the Moon.
