Humongously Unwieldy Gorilla Showdown

Operation: H.U.G.S. is the first story in the ninth episode of Season 3 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on August 13, 2004 on Cartoon Network.

Summary[]

Numbuh 4 isn’t impressed with being dragged along to another Rainbow Monkey function and declares both his hatred and the stupidity of the creatures, which enrages the Rainbow Monkey Cult. He’s forced to endure the ultimate display of Rainbow Monkey spirit when the Cult introduces him to the king of all monkeys, Rainbow Monkey Kong himself. Wally tries to teach the creature how a “proper” giant primate should behave, but gets more than he bargained for when the monster tracks him down to the city with the desire for an ultimate Rainbow Monkey friendship hug.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Wally Beatles running for his life after wondering what kind of a mess he gets himself into. He runs as fast as he could and before he can make a break for it, Kuki Saban exclaims to him, accusing Wally of running away when they are already in the Rainbow Monkey Fair-and-Share Fair, much to Wally's frustration and his hatred of Rainbow Monkeys. He would rather be back at the Treehouse working on the giant wrestling robot with Hoagie. He reaches the tipping point and exclaimed, "Rainbow Monkeys are so stupid!" And, “stupid,” echoed around the whole carnival and to space as well.

Kuki didn't like his attitude with the Rainbow Monkey and Wally starts making fun of the Rainbow Monkeys, calling them stupid so loudly and many times over that other girls, who came to enjoy the fair hears him up close, infuriating all of them. Wally continues to call Rainbow Monkeys stupid until Kuki decides to let him leave, but not without a big Friendly Friend Rainbow Monkey Goodbye Hug, only for Wally to refute anything associated with the Rainbow Monkeys anymore. Bethany approached Kuki when Wally refused to give her a goodbye hug, which is customary of Rainbow Monkeys. She proceeded to direct Wally to a trap when he asked where the exit was located. Nonetheless, Wally goes over to the corner and ends up falling into a trap hole.

The next scene, Wally wakes up, only to find himself being chained to the floor with Bethany and other Rainbow Monkey Cult girls who've taken him to Rainbow Monkey Island. As punishment for disrespecting the joy of Rainbow Monkeys, Bethany and the cult sentenced Wally to receive the Ultimate Friendly Friend Rainbow Monkey Goodbye Hug. The cult begins to chant and dance the song in a tribal calling before leaving Wally to his fate. After the chant was over, a Rainbow Monkey Kong appears before him. At first, the monkey looked vicious, but it turned out to be a softy who ended up playfully tickling Wally until he drags him around in the jungle.

Wally was being hugged, kissed, and being smooshed from the Rainbow Monkey, so he decided to teach the Rainbow Monkey how to be tough instead of soft. He tries many things like breaking rocks, ripping away plants, and even show aggression, but every tries he makes ends in failure because the Rainbow Monkey is too kind for him. Then, while the Rainbow Monkey Kong was napping, Nigel and Hoagie arrives on Rainbow Monkey Island and rescues the operative and leaves the island.

Back to the Treehouse, Wally recaps everything that happened while he was on the island and insulted the monkey for being unless, unaware that Rainbow Monkey Kong has follows Wally all the way to the Treehouse behind him and starts attacking. Numbuh 1 and 2 tries attacking and fighting back against the ape with heavy artillery and an airplane, but the ape was too strong for them, so Wally comes up with the only solution to bring out the W.R.A.S.L.E.R. that they've been working on. Wally and the Rainbow Monkey Kong charge at each other, ready to pounce one another, only to give each other the Friendly Friend Rainbow Monkey Goodbye Hug. The ape was happy and starts leaving.

Numbuh 1 and 2 seems to make fun of Wally for being all softy and wanted a “huggy wuggy” and they laughed and laughed themselves silly but Wally claimed that it was the only way to get rid of him, even calling the monkey stupid. Unfortunately for him, Numbuh 3 overheard him call the giant Rainbow Monkey stupid again, and so did the Rainbow Monkey Kong.

Trivia[]

  • Numbuh 5 is the only member of Sector V not to appear in this story.
  • A running gag in this episode would be Wally saying, “How do I get myself into these messes?”.
  • Numbuh 3 convinced Numbuh 4 to come with her to the Rainbow Monkey Care and Share Fair by telling him they were going to the "extra super coolest place ever". He says she tricked him because he doesn't think the place is cool at all.
  • Mr. Warburton revealed on his blog that he received complaints from angry moms about this episode's frequent use of the word "stupid".[1]
  • This episode along with Operation: J.E.W.E.L.S. aired on the same day as the premiere of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

Continuity[]

  • Numbuh 4's dislike of Rainbow Monkeys is persistent throughout the series.
  • Numbuh 3's fiery eyes return from earlier episodes.
  • Rainbow Monkey Island last appeared in Operation: R.A.I.N.B.O.W.S..
    • The actual Rainbow Monkeys last seen in that episode, can be seen in the background while the Rainbow Monkey Cult is singing the Rainbow Monkey song.

Cultural References[]

  • This episode is a parody of King Kong, but Ann Darrow's role is played by a male, which is Numbuh 4.
  • The way Numbuh 4 transforms into the W.R.A.S.L.E.R. is likely taken from the Transformers franchise.
  • When one of the Rainbow Monkey Cult girls get closer to the camera, it makes a reference to the Alphablocks special episode Band together.

Goofs[]

  • When Numbuh 4 is running at the start of the episode, he can be heard panting, but his mouth is closed.
  • When the shot pans out to show the Rainbow Monkey fair, Numbuh 4 is suddenly surrounded by girls who were not that close to him a second ago.
  • Numbuh 4's placement relative to the Rainbow Monkey trash can changes between shots until he leaves the fair.
  • When Numbuh 4 complains about being stuck at the fair, the booths behind him are empty. But in the previous pan-out shot and in the following pan-out shot, the booths are being used by girls.
  • When Numbuh 3 explains that Numbuh 4 has to do the Rainbow Monkey goodbye hug, the sign behind her that previously said, "Guess your happiness," is now blank.
  • The terrain in front of Numbuh 4 change slightly between when the cult girls are dancing, and the appearance of Rainbow Monkey Kong.
  • When Kong falls down from the treehouse, there is no house underneath it. Yet, planks are thrown about when Kong lands on the ground.
  • Kong falls down on the other side of the street from the treehouse, but in the next shot can be seen sitting on the ruins of another house further down from the treehouse.
  • There is a great size difference between Kong's first attack on the mission control room, and its second attack. In the first attack, Kong could easily fit its entire body inside of the room, but Kong is way too big to fit during the second attack.
