Rescue Aids Beloved Bunny In Trouble

Operation: R.A.B.B.I.T. is the first story in the first episode of Season 4 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on November 19, 2004 on Cartoon Network.

Summary[]

Numbuhs 2 and 5 travel through the school jungle gym to help find the First Grade's missing pet bunny, Mr. Fluffalupagus, from Heinrich von Marzipan, who kidnapped him and plans on making chocolate bunnies from real bunnies by dipping them into the chocolate volcano.

Plot[]

While Numbuhs 2 and 5 are on their way to lunch, they take a shortcut through 1st grade hallway, which they unexpectedly find is a barren wasteland, and the children looking rather impoverished and begging for their help. They meet the first grade president Sammy who is overjoyed as he had expected their arrival (as it was predicted in their Art class). He explains that their pet rabbit Mr. Fluffleupagus was kidnapped and without it, their crayons broke, their milk soured, and their water fountains stopped working and dried up. When asked who was responsible, Sammy explains that the kidnapper did not give his name, only laughing as he offered to the children a single peppermint as payment. This leads Numbuhs 5 and 2 to go after it (although Numbuh 2 is preoccupied with trying to get lunch).

The kidnapper is revealed to be none other than Heinrich Von Marzipan, aided by his Candy Bandit henchmen. He had also kidnapped one of the first grade children Jessica and forced her to lead him to a temple located inside a chocolate volcano. Meanwhile, Numbuhs 2 and 5 arrive at the Jungle Gym; Number 2 continues to complain about missing lunch, but an irritated Numbuh 5 insists that they help the first-graders first. He asks Numbuh 5 how far the Jungle Gym goes, to which she replies “Nobody knows”, which echoes throughout the playground as the two operatives start to climb through the gym’s seemingly endless monkey bars.

After a long trek, the two reach the chocolate volcano, where they witness Heinrich lowering Jessica's stuffed rabbit Hopsy Mopsy (having reneged on his earlier promise to Jessica not to harm her toy in exchange for her assistance, much to her heartbreak) down into the choco-lava, which turns it to solid chocolate. Just as Heinrich is about to lower the first-graders' pet rabbit, he spots Numbuh 2 trying to taste the chocolate for himself. Heinrich orders his minions to do away with Numbuh 2, which they attempt to do by initially throwing rocks at him. Amused, Numbuh 2 taunts the soldiers only to be forced to flee when a soldier brandishing a lollipop machine gun steps in next and begins firing at him as well. Numbuh 2 swings out of the way of the shots and onto the cage, causing the cage to sway back and forth. Numbuh 5 leaps in to turn the crank (knocking out the soldier operating it) raising the cage up and away from the choco-lava. However, Heinrich spots her and, incensed by her presence, he snatches the machine gun from the soldier holding it and fires on her himself. Numbuh 5 takes cover behind a drum, ricocheting the lollipop bullets at the Candy Bandits, knocking them all out. Jessica offers her help, which Numbuh 5 accepts after she sees the crank (which had been stopped by a lollipop stuck in it) start to move again.

After a long fight, Numbuh 5 falls onto the cage with Numbuh 2, causing the cage to start falling at a tremendous rate, stopping just before the choco-lava. Witnessing this, Heinrich openly taunts their predicament and prepares to fire at the cage’s release lever, intending to turn them into chocolate as well. Just as he bids them goodbye in his native German, an angry Jessica pushes Heinrich towards the cliff, losing his footing and falling over the edge. Horrified, Numbuh 5 tries to call and reach for Heinrich but can only watch as he finally hits the choco-lava, apparently killing him.

Just then, the volcano begins to erupt, causing the entire place to shake violently; the still-unconscious Candy Bandits eventually awaken and flee the area. Just as the big gear explodes and the smaller ones start to retract, Jessica jams them once more, and yell to Numbuhs 2 and 5 to climb back up onto solid ground, and they do so just in time as the giant rabbit statue crumbles and falls into the volcano with both Jessica's stuffed bunny and the first-graders' real bunny safe with Numbuhs 2 and 5.

Back at the first grade classroom, the return of the bunny magically restores the first grade classes as well as the students’ clothes, After Sammy thanks Numbuhs 2 and 5 for their efforts, Number 2 cracks another joke only to be chased around by an angry Numbuh 5 who found the joke extremely lame.

After the "END TRANSMISSION" title card, a chocolate hand grabs onto the edge of the chocolate volcano and Heinrich's evil laughter is heard, foreshadowing his next appearance in Operation: C.H.O.C.O.L.A.T.E..

Trivia[]

  • It's shown that Numbuh 5 still cares for Heinrich Von Marzipan, even though he was a villain. This has been shown various times throughout the series.
  • The jungle gym is made to parody a real life jungle.
  • Following with this episode and throughout the series, the end credits no longer list the characters voiced in the episode.
  • This episode along with Operation: F.L.U.S.H. aired on the same day as Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi premiered on Cartoon Network, and the Nickelodeon's animated film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in theaters.

Series continuity[]

  • Heinrich returns for the first time since Operation: J.E.W.E.L.S., and he brings his candy bandits along from that episode.
  • The desert theme from Operation: J.E.W.E.L.S. returns in this episode with the first grade hallway.

Cultural references[]

  • This episode is a parody of Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom.
  • The rabbit's name, Mr. Fluffleupagus, is an obvious parody of the character Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street.
  • Additionally, Heinrich falling into the chocolate volcano's lava is somewhat inspired by Gollum falling into the lava of Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings. Their motives are also similar; Gollum desires the ring, and Heinrich desires the lava's power.
  • Numbuh 5 slaps Numbuh 2 with her hat similar to how in Gilligan's Island Skipper slaps Gilligan the same way when the latter messes up around him.
  • The scene where Heinrich falls into the chocolate lava is also a reference to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) when Augustus Gloop falls into the chocolate river.

Goofs[]

  • As Numbuh 2 and 5 are looking down the first grade hallway, it's deserted and filled with sand. When they start walking down the hallway, there are a number of kids sitting sitting around on the floor.
  • Even though a stuffed animal and real people would turn to chocolate by bathing in the chocolate lava, it had no effect on the iron cage.
  • It's never revealed why the temple crumbles to pieces.
  • The lever at the temple is shown to be intact when Heinrich aims at it just before he is jumped by Jessica, but it's somehow lying broken on the ground seconds later despite Heinrich not firing his gun.
  • For some reason, the school's shared playground was also affected by the cursed absence of Mr. Fluffleupagus.
  • Jessica's stuffed bunny is missing after it's turned back to its original state.
  • Rob Paulsen is not listed as a voice actor in the end credits.
