Uncovering The Only Perfect Island Accidentally

Operation: U.T.O.P.I.A. is the first story in the third episode of Season 3 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It first aired on June 25, 2004 on Cartoon Network.

Information[]

Summary[]

Numbuh 1 finds a perfect island, with lots of candy, fun and no adults. However, thinking back it's obvious that something strange is happening and has to do with Chester's Happy Headband.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Chester in his laboratory using various pieces of technological construction tools to create a new device in which he built with the scheme of making buhmillions of dollars in mind. This device would be known as the Happy Headband. When the device is complete, Chester hopes that now that the headband is ready for distribution parents would “pay ogles of sweet sweet cash to have their little snot nosed brats out of their hair for good!” Chester then sits back in his chair proud of his work until a piece of debris falls onto his head from the ceiling in which immediately catches his attention, he suspects that this is due to the Kids Next Door infiltrating his lab – in which he has prepared for their arrival with the firepower of his Weaponized Chair, in which he opens fire on where he thinks the Kids Next Door are infiltrating his laboratory. Meanwhile while Chester is pre-occupied with firing upon the thought to be Kids Next Door operatives Numbuh 1 sneaks behind his chair in an attempt to steal the Happy Headband, in which he succeeds in doing so – however Chester quickly notices Nigel stealing it and so would open fire upon him in an attempt to stop him. Chester fails to land a hit on Nigel and ends up destroying parts of his lab in the process. Nigel pointing out how Chester is easy to fool free falls backwards out of the broken window of Chester's laboratory into the cityscape below. Chester attempts to get Nigel to give back his headband but would fail in doing so.

As Nigel continues to fall towards the surface he would then tap his footwear together to activate his J.E.T.A.B.O.O.T.S which lift him into the air before he can fall onto the road. Nigel then uses the J.E.T.A.B.O.O.T.S to fly to a nearby skyscraper where the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E sits dormant ready to be activated and piloted. Mounting himself upon the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E., Nigel pulls a handle from its mechanic neck which activates four rockets which the 2x4 vehicle uses to take off and fly across the cityscape.

As the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E does this, Nigel contacts the Sector V Treehouse via the 2x4 vehicles cockpit screen to which Numbuh 5 quickly answers. She asks Nigel if he “Got the goods.” to which Nigel responds that he had indeed managed to claim what he was due to collect for the mission, to which he would also claim that Chester would fall for anything – however before he could finish his sentence Nigel hears a explosion behind him and would turn to see that one of the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E's rockets has a puncture with smoke coming out the puncture hole. Nigel sees Chester hot behind his tail on his Airship trying to get his Happy Headband back by force. Chester then activates the laser on the bottom of his Airship and open fire upon Nigel – however Nigel just narrowly outmaneuvers Chester's laser blasts struggling to pilot and keep the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E in the air with its punctured rocket. Abigail asks if Nigel can read her in which he responds that the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E's stabilizers are not responding. As Nigel would continue to narrowly dodge the laser blasts Chester would catch him in a dead lock and would prepare to open fire once more. Nigel looks back in horror at the laser blast then plummets to the waters below screaming as the laser blast would have successfully landed a hit on the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E. Abigail, appearing visibly worried, calls out to see if Nigel is ok, but then loses contact with the operative as it would appear that Numbuh 1 had seemed to have met an untimely end.

Over the black screen, a female voice tries to wake up Nigel. When the next scene fades, he awakens in a sandy plain on an island with no shoes to see a girl next to him. Numbuh 1 saw there wasn’t a single scratch on him or his G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E. and he didn’t know what happened. After wondering out loud where he is, the girl says that she is worried and Nigel learns from her that there are no adults on the island. Before the girl shows him where she lives, she introduces herself as Katie and she opens some leaves to reveal some kids in a sandy beach with lots of big televisions having fun, eating candy, and watching TV. They head into a hot dog shaped boat (as Katie says that the 'last one in is a rotten egg') and Nigel saw various children enjoying candy in the oceans. Katie pushes Nigel off the boat and he thinks the ocean is soda filled with goo but it wasn’t. Katie does a cannonball into the ocean and they have fun in there.

After a quick montage of the duo enjoying candy that grew from the trees, jumping on pillows, and sliding on an underground candy cliff, they are seen walking through the island as Nigel remarks that it is indeed a perfect world. However, Katie tells Nigel that they still need a leader. They decide to split up as Nigel begins to find his G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E while Katie goes to eat with other children at the castle for "Birthday Cake for Dinner Night". But just as Nigel makes it to the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E, which got washed up on the island, Katie returns in less than a minute and Nigel tells her that he still needs to find his teammates. She tells him that his team is already here and takes him to them.

In the next scene, Katie takes Nigel to a fancy pool room where Numbuhs 2, 3, 4, and 5 are waiting for him. As it turns out they tracked him when he crashed. Now Nigel was really puzzled. After Katie leaves for some fun to do, Numbuh 1 says they have to leave as something suspicious is going on: he and his ship are unharmed, the headband and his shoes are missing, and Katie knew who he was before they were introduced. His team assures him it was just luck and Numbuh 4 asks Nigel to join in swimming, but when he is about to take off his shirt, he suddenly catches onto one crucial detail: Wallabee can't swim; he notices Numbuh 4 is not afraid of the water. The four monotonously begin taunting Nigel saying that, "things are not right as they seem to appear" as we cut back to Chester's laboratory in the real world where Nigel is already wearing the Happy Headband and Chester was controlling Nigel's fantasy where he insults Nigel that he can't find the Happy Headband because he is wearing it, laughing madly. We then cut back to Nigel's fantasy, where the faces of Hoagie, Kuki, Wallabee, and Abigail turn into those of Chester's as Nigel runs out of the room and into the beach where Katie awaits him. Katie's head turns into Chester, becomes vicious, and attacks him with clones of Katie with Chester's face on them. Nigel runs for the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E only to have its head also turned into Chester's and it taunts Nigel that he has no jet in his fantasy world. Nigel is surrounded by the Katie clones and thinks he is doomed, but then he remembers he is still wearing his J.E.T.A.B.O.O.T.S in the real world. Nigel begins to click his bare feet as the scene warps into reality with Nigel flying through the air and breaking free from his fantasy and its illusions.

Finally, Nigel and Chester have a short brawl for the Happy Headband, which ends with Nigel putting it on Chester. In Chester's fantasy, he has defeated Nigel and finds himself in a room surrounded by a cheering crowd of his fellow villains. A good Mr. Boss then awards Chester a check for "a buhmillion dollars" for his victory and the villains cheered for Chester. Back at the real world, Nigel and the others are watching Chester with the Happy Headband stuck on his head and Abigail praises Nigel for his "nice work". Nigel thanks her and Hoagie asks if it is super-cool in Nigel's fantasy. Nigel replies back "Not as cool as hanging out with [his] team." and Sector V begin to leave the laboratory. While they walk away, Wallabee changes the dial on the device to Sour. Chester wondered why his giant check suddenly disappeared, and then immediately realized he is wearing his own headband. He agonizes over the nightmare he is having and demands for release as the episode ends.

Quotes[]

Chester: Ah, ah, you don't have any jets in my world! (laughing evilly)

[the Katie clones surround Numbuh 1]

Numbuh 1: Maybe not, Chester. But, I do in the real world.

[Numbuh 1 activates his jetaboots]

Chester: (shocked) Hey! wh-what are you doing? No, no.

Numbuh 1: (screaming)

[Numbuh 1 breaks out of the chamber]

Trivia[]

  • This is Chester's third evil plan to be thwarted by the Kids Next Door.
  • This episode is Chester's second and last appearance in Season 3.
  • This is the first and only appearance of the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E., and the first appearance of the J.E.T.A.B.O.O.T.S. in Season 3.
  • This is the first episode to mainly take place within a simulation.
  • This is the first and only time Professor XXXL is seen without any animal mutations.
  • When the Sector V members speak in sync before their heads turn into Chester (after Numbuh 1's realization of wearing the Happy Headband), you might hear the voices of the Delightful Children From Down the Lane.
    • This is most likely due to the fact of having the same voice actors.
  • Numbuh 1's simulation is evident by him not wearing shoes, while Chester's simulation is evident by Numbuh 1 having a bandaid on his head.
  • Mr. Warburton, in retrospect of this episode, felt that Chester and Professor XXXL should have been blended into one character.[1]

Series Continuity[]

Pop Culture References[]

  • This episode is a parody of the Superman comic, "For the Man Who Has Everything".
  • The entire plot is a homage to both The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland (1951) and Peter Pan (1953). Both movies end with Dorothy, Alice and Wendy waking up from their respective dreams in a similar manner to Nigel.
  • When Numbuh 1 clicks his boots together, it's a reference to Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, where she clicks her heels together in order to get home.

Errors/Goofs[]

  • The tool Chester uses to complete his Happy Headband disappears after he's done using it.
  • The console table in front of Chester disappears after he hears the first explosion, and reappears when Numbuh 1 swoops down to steal the headband.
  • A huge hole can be seen in the roof behind Chester when he activates his weaponized chair, even though the rubble fell down from above him.
  • The hole in the roof retains the same size despite Chester shooting at it.
  • The green pocket on Numbuh 1's backpack changes in size between appearances.
  • Even though only the engine on the right side of the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E. is hit, the left engine also stops working.
    • Even though this could be seen as a stabilizing feature, Numbuh 1 clearly says that the stabilizer is not responding.
  • When Chester tips his blimp to target Numbuh 1, the top of the blimp is shown as completely yellow, when it is actually purple with yellow edges.
  • Just before Numbuh 1 is shot down, the screen on the G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E. is just green and does not show Numbuh 5.
  • As Numbuh 1 is falling, we can see the holes for his J.E.T.A.B.O.O.T.S. on the underside of his shoes, but they were not there in the previous shot of Chester closing in on him.
  • Katie switches between being just at the edge of the water and being being several feet up on the beach.
  • As Katie is leading Numbuh 1 to the lagoon, she walks through red and purple leaves, but Numbuh 1 only walks through the red leaves.
  • Numbuh 1 pass some of the same kids multiple times.
  • The G.A.R.G.O.C.Y.C.L.E. was not visible on the beach when Numbuh 1 was found by Katie, but he finds it immediately when he returns to the beach.
  • The nature outside of the pool house is inconsistent between shots.
  • Numbuh 1's position relative to the pool, and the simulated Sector V's placements within the pool, are also inconsistent between shots.
  • When Numbuh 1 runs through the Katie hologram, the resulting fragments morph into more Katie holograms. Though six holograms appear as a result, only four of them are seen chasing Numbuh 1.
  • The tear on Numbuh 1's shoulder switch arm when he is free of the headband.
  • In theory, a victim of the Happy Headband could just grab hold on the top of their head, and thereby pull off the headband.
