Zoologically Obsessed Octogenarian

Operation: Z.O.O. is the second story in the eleventh episode of Season 1 of Codename: Kids Next Door. It aired on February 21, 2003 on Cartoon Network.

Information[]

Summary[]

An old lady shows up at Numbuh 1's house, inviting Sector V to a Children's Zoo. Numbuh 1 refuses and doesn't realize that the zoo is made to exhibit children instead of animals. Sector V then is captured by the lady and are made to become one of the attractions at the zoo. The zoologist reveals to them her plan, and that she wants to put them in the Bully's cage for lunch. To escape from the zoo, they team up with the Delightful Children. The DCFDTL decide to leave the KND in peace for now, and Sector V manages to get everyone out of the zoo.

Plot[]

The episode begins with an old lady, Mrs. Goodwall, ringing Sector V’s treehouse/Numbuh 1’s household, inviting them to visit her “children’s zoo.” Numbuh 1 immediately declines the spotty invitation and slams the door in her face. He goes back up to the roof of the treehouse where the rest of Sector V is working on new 2x4 technology. As Numbuh 1 is talking, he’s knocked out cold with a tranquilizer dart, along with the rest of Sector V.

Sometime later, Numbuh 4 is the first to come to and notices he has an "earring" (ear tag) on his ear, along with the rest of his fellow operatives. They look around and quickly realize that they’re being held in a cage as part of a zoo, where children are the attraction instead of animals. The big cage next to theirs is keeping captive none other than the Delightful Children from Down the Lane, who also have ear tags. Mrs. Goodwall shows up to greet the newest additions to her sadistic zoo. Sector V is exhibited as the Obnoxious Brats Enclosure while the Delightful Children from Down the Lane are the Charmingly Good Children Enclosure. She explains that grownups are “fascinated” by children but that they’re too much of a pain to keep in the house. She points out the various kid exhibits: Nerd Enclosure, Gossips Cage, and Ugly Children Display. The star attraction however is Schoolyard Bully, whom live children (more specifically, children from the Obnoxious Brat Enclosure) are fed to for the entertainment of zoogoers. Mrs. Goodwall tells Sector V that, since they are the Obnoxious Brats Enclosure, they’ll be fed to Schoolyard Bully at 2:00pm.

With time not on their side, Sector V begin frantically scrambling for a way out, such as biting the cage bars, trying to dig through the floor by hand, and even trying to jump out through the roof. The Delightful Children, not at all phased by the situation, play music on an old-time phonograph record player. When Numbuhs 1, 2, 3, and 4 begin to panic, Numbuh 5 shuts them up and tells them she has a plan, but that they would have to ally with the Delightful Children. The other operatives protest at first, but realizing they have no choice and that there’s hundreds of other kids in danger, agree to the plan. The Delightfuls, who are now worrying themselves about not making it home in time for lunch with Father, reluctantly agree to work with their arch rivals.

Numbuh 2 and Numbuh 4 begin by yanking a chain off a tire swing in their cage while the Delightful Children wind up their record player. Numbuh 5 throws the Delightfuls the chain for them to connect it to the turn table; the plan is to force the cages open by pulling them apart using the tire swing and record player. When the cages are nearly broken apart, the record player breaks down. The Delightfuls wind it up again and the cages break, freeing them and Sector V. They thank the Kids Next Door operatives for the assistance and head go on their way.

Sector V immediately gets to work on liberating the rest of the kids in the zoo, though repeatedly refusing to free Schoolyard Bully. With all the kids free, Numbuhs 2, 3, and 4 begin herding the crowd of kids towards the zoo exit. While this is happening, Mrs. Goodwall fires a tranquilizer at Numbuh 1 and 5 with a hunting rifle, nearly hitting them. She tells the two that the Delightful Children tipped her off about their plan. Numbuh 5 quickly hatches a new plan: being as polite as possible to Mrs. Goodwall in order to win her forgiveness, in hopes they won’t be fed to Schoolyard Bully. Numbuh 1, confused at first, quickly catches on and follows her lead. While this is happening, the kids are trying to find a way out but keep running into locked gates.

With the bitter zookeeper convinced of their act, Numbuh 5 persuades Mrs. Goodwall to take a few steps back. This in turn puts her in the path of the kid stampede and she’s trampled on. The kids run out of the zoo through an open gate.

Soon after, Numbuh 1 finds Numbuh 5 and tells her its time to go home, but she now claims to like going to the zoo. The episode ends with her watching Schoolyard Bully chase Mrs. Goodwall around his playground pit.

Numbuh 4: Numbuh 1, should I use the hammer or the brick? (Everyone else got hit too and fall asleep)

Trivia[]

  • Father is mentioned in this episode, which takes place before he is introduced.
    Leona in Zoo

Leona's cameo as an "Ugly Kid".

  • While the Delightful Children are in their cage, the tall blonde girl is the only one in their group with an identification earring. This may be because they never separate, and thus giving one to each of them would not have been necessary.
  • The plot of this episode was taken from an abandoned story where the Kids Next Door turned adults into part animals to put in a zoo.[1]
  • Numbuh 1 can hear the doorbell to his house all the way up into the treehouse.
  • Mrs. Goodwall is probably named after British zoologist, Jane Goodall.

Series Continuity[]

Goofs[]

  • While they are breaking open their cage, Numbuh Five's earring is the same color of her skin.
  • When the Delightful Children are thanking the KND, the blond girl has a far thicker shadow under her hair on the left side than her right side, and thicker than usual.
  • Numbuh 4's tag is not marked with his number when he is pushing the Ugly Children out of their cage.
  • Numbuh 2's tag is often missing through the episode.
  • As Sector V and the Delightfuls are preparing their escape, in one shot, the blonde girl Delightful is seen winding up the record player, but Bruce (blonde boy) is nowhere to be seen. A couple of shots later, Constance (pigtailed girl) is winding it and Bruce can be seen just behind her.
  • When the Zookeeper is getting trampled by the kids you can see some of the same kids run by more than once.
    • You can see three of the same tall kid with a yellow shirt and blue pants with orange or brownish hair.
